Town Hall Railings - Peter Zappa 2010
previous next
The railings were replacing the ones installed in the 1980’s. The artist was given free rein to undertake the work whilst keeping in mind the heritage location and history of the site. The end product is a whimsical aesthetic treatise on the site and its former uses. The Town Hall in the past has been used not only as a centre of local government management but also as a dance hall, movie theatre, youth centre and offices for a Seniors Centre. Originally the War Memorial was situated at the front of the building on Albany Highway, but, following vandalism this was relocated to its current position in Memorial Park at the corner of Albany Highway and Manning Road. Its whimsy includes a certain apparent movement of the repeated ‘cubes’ and the word ‘Canning’ is hidden in the steelwork. Location - Albany Highway and George Street West frontages of the Old Town Hall site, 1309 Albany Highway, Cannington
