    Hi Liz

    Thank you for contacting the City of Canning and sharing your concerns of traffic speeding on Marjorie Avenue in Riverton.

    If you observe antisocial driving or speeding, report it to the police right away by calling 131 444. Alternatively, you can visit a police station to fill out a Traffic Incident Report if the behaviour continues and you have details about the offenders.  You can also report these issues to the WA Police on their website (https://www.wa.gov.au/service/security/law-enforcement/report-hoon-driving(External link)).

    The City recognises that the safety of the community and our road users is important. Accordingly, the City has a Local Area Traffic Management Program which evaluates the need for traffic calming and determines whether traffic calming will be effective at addressing the speeding or road safety problems without generating other risks or concerns for residents (such as the increased noise of traffic deceleration and acceleration and driving over speed humps).

    For your information, the City’s Local Area Traffic Management Program identifies projects through an equitable assessment and ranking system, considering the following criteria:

    • Recorded operating speed of traffic (85th percentile) 
    • Percentage of traffic exceeding the legal speed limit
    • Average weekday traffic volumes, 
    • Recorded crash history, 
    • Potential road safety risks associated with the existing road environment, 
    • Presence and volume of pedestrians, cyclists and other vulnerable road users, 
    • Proximity to schools, or areas with a high proportion of people with disabilities, or the elderly such as aged care facilities, 
    • Other notable land use and activity generators (e.g., shopping centres, community centres, parks, and reserves, and
    • Any other amenity factors.


    Following receipt of your request, I can confirm that the site you have identified has been included for evaluation and a traffic management assessment in accordance with the City’s procedures. This will occur in either Term 4 this year, or Term 1 of 2025.
