What’s being shaped?

City of Canning’s 16 neighbourhoods are dynamic, each with their own unique characteristics, aspirations and opportunities.

Backstory

Bentley and St James are both located on Whadjuk Country. The Whadjuk Noongar history within Canning is as significant today as it was in the past.

The Djarlgarro Beelier (Canning River) provided an abundance of resources as well as food for the Noongar people. The area reportedly had one of the highest densities of Noongar population in Western Australia.

Bentley and St James are suburbs within the City of Canning and are located 8kms from the Perth CBD.

Established as a suburb in the 1940's, Bentley contained a high percent of public and social housing. In 1969-1970, the Brownlie Towers precinct was created which had its own school, community centre, shopping area, swimming pools and sports facilities. The towers were demolished in 2019 making way for the upcoming 'Bentley 360' project which plans to redevelop and infill the area.

St James is another historical suburb gazetted by the City of Canning in the 1950’s also with a high percent of public and social housing and with plenty of heritage and authentic character.

Today, there is a large young population within the areas, Bentley’s population contains above the state average for people aged 20-34 years due to the tertiary institutions in the area and large amount of student housing. Bentley also has a large amount of residents who were born overseas adding to the diversity within the area.

There are already many active community groups within the area.

Join us for the Bentley Community Movie Night.
The family friendly movie night will also provide a free sausage sizzle and ice cream. You can also meet the Canning Youth team and have a chat to the Neighbourhood and Engagement Team.

Where: Harry Turner Pavilion at Queens Park Reservce (Cnr of Treasure Road & Centre Street, Queens Park WA 6107)

Residents from the suburbs of Bentley, St James, Queens Park, East Cannington and Welshpool are invited to a Free Community Safety Session, delivered by the City of Canning in partnership with Cannington Police Station.

This initiative is designed to facilitate discussions between our community, the City’s Community Safety team and local Police about their respective roles in working together for a safer community.

All Canning residents who attend will receive a free Community Safety kit containing handy safety tips, resources and information about their Ward.
Registrations are essential. Capacity restrictions apply.

The program is ran in partnership between Hilllview Intercultural Centre and Football Futures.

The City of Canning is upgrading Wyong Park as part of the Bentley Parkscapes program. The program aims to provide the surrounding Bentley 360 area with improved public open spaces for the whole community to enjoy. Construction works will commence in late September 2022 and are expected to complete by March 2023.
The Wyong Park upgrade has many exciting features such as a new multi-sports court, a new playground with some nature play elements, new shelter, BBQ, seating and outdoor exercise equipment. Other essential improvements include new pathways, lighting and garden beds with a mixture of local and native plant species.
During the construction period please note the following:
- The oval will remain open to the public for the duration of the works
- some parts of the main carpark will be unavailable
- all works will be carried out on weekdays, Monday to Friday, 7am to 5pm
- construction fencing will be erected around sections of the park and members of the public will not be permitted
- pedestrian and vehicle traffic will need to be redirected from time to time during the construction to ensure safety of the public around the site; and
- measures will be put in place to control dust and noise as much as possible during construction.
The City would like to apologise for any inconvenience these works may cause and looks forward to providing new facilities for the community to enjoy.

The City of Canning has some exciting news to share with you. We’re upgrading Dumond Park as part of the Bentley Parkscapes program, which aims to improve public open spaces in the surrounding Bentley 360 area for everyone to enjoy.
Construction will begin in March 2023 and is expected to wrap up by June 2023. One cool thing about this upgrade is that Dumond Park will be the first park in the City to have a future canopy of 100%! There will be seating areas for visitors to relax and connect with nature, as well as crushed limestone paths and new garden beds with low-growing shrubs and tall trees.
The City is also putting in new infrastructure like a bird watering station, bee hotels, and nesting boxes to turn the park into an Urban Forest for the community.
During construction, please keep in mind that work will only take place on weekdays from 7am to 5pm to minimise disruption. Construction fencing will be put up around some parts of the park for safety, and there may be occasional redirections of pedestrian and vehicle traffic.
The City apologises for any inconvenience and is looking forward to providing new and improved facilities for the community to enjoy.

The purpose of the meeting is to consider and receive the City's Annual Report and to consider any other general business.
