Riverton Park - Dog Exercise Trial
Consultation has concluded.
Background
The Riverton Park playing field and its surrounds was trialled as an on-leash dog exercise area, while the area in the north-west corner of the park, which lies between Laurel Close and Barber Close will remain as an off-leash dog exercise area.
The trial is in response to concerns which include dogs digging holes in the playing surface, which can result in ankle injuries for players, owners not cleaning up after their dogs and unsupervised dogs running into the playground areas and sports games. At the City's Ordinary Council Meeting (19 September 2023), Council committed to engaging with the community, clubs and community groups in accordance with the Dog Act 1976.
The trial ran from the 24 July - 31 March 2025 with signage placed in the park outlining details about the trials.
What is an on-leash dog exercise area?
An on-leash park does not prohibit dogs from being brought onto the oval and surrounds BUT the dog must be on-leash at all times. As always, owners are responsible for cleaning up after their dogs, and owners are asked not to take their on-leash dog into the children’s playgrounds.
What we consulted on
We asked residents and park users whether they supported:
- changing the park so that dogs are no longer allowed off-leash on the playing field and surrounds
- the north-west area of the park remaining as a designated off-leash area.
Respondents could provide feedback using the located at the bottom of this page, posting a letter to City, calling our Parks and Environment team: 1300 422 664 or emailing parks.admin@canning.wa.gov.au
The community feedback helped inform a recommendation to Council in March 2025 to determine whether the Oval and its surrounds at Riverton Park should continue to be an on-leash area.
Outcome of consultation
At the Ordinary Council Meeting 18 March 2025, Report IE-002-25 was considered and Council determined that:
Riverton Park (comprising the Riverton Oval playing field and surrounds), including the north-western corner of the park (between Laurel Close and Barber Place) remains an off-leash area for dogs, in accordance with section 31(3A} of the Dog Act 1976.
