Canning's Vision for Age Friendly

Our vision is for Canning to be an age friendly city, fostering collaboration with our diverse population of seniors, to ensure inclusivity, accessibility and to meet the changing needs of our community members as they age.

An Age Friendly City, is inclusive and accessible for people of all ages. This encompasses spaces and places, programs and initiatives that make a community better for all residents including children, young people, parents and older people.

Our 2026/27 Plan consists of three focus areas, aligning with The 10-year State Seniors Strategy (2023-2033) and first five-year Action Plan (2023-2027):

Focus area 1: Active and resilient ageing. Objective: Older people remain active, have agency and are connected to their communities.

Focus area 2: Celebrating ageing, diversity and respect. Objective: Celebrate diversity of older people and ensure their continuation to contribute to economic and social activity.

Focus area 3: Organisational capability and community engagement. Objective: Listen to, respond and involve our older community members in decisions that affect them.

Age Friendly Plan 2026 - 2027 Consultation Summary

Throughout 2024 to 2026, the City of Canning engaged with older people and their families.

The key feedback we received was:

• From targeted in-person engagement with over 1000 older people.

• 90.6% of respondents support the Plan.

• The Canning community feel the Age Friendly Plan will have a positive impact on the lives of older people.

• Improved communication and delivery of inclusive services for older people is a high priority.

• Older people living in Canning value the community to be inclusive, accessible, respectful and safe.

• Nearly half of respondents are members of one or more community, social and/or sporting groups.

• Older people prefer to engage with the City in person or use social media.

Transperth Journey Planning and Public Transport Tour - Have a Go Day

Canning seniors are travelling for free on the Transperth network and boosting their confidence to visit some great places!
We really enjoyed learning how to install and use the Transperth Journey Planner App to plan our public transport trip to the infamous Have a Go Day event at Burswood Park.
Did you know you can access free public transport with your WA Seniors Card Smart Rider? Come and join us for the next session.

FREE Seniors Information Resource

The free Seniors Information Resource is now available https://www.wa.gov.au/organisation/department-of-communities/seniors-information-resource
It includes information about housing, health, aged care services, elder abuse, technology and communication, transport, connecting with community, end of life planning and a range of other topics. It aims to increase awareness and uptake of existing services, concessions and programs for older people in Western Australia.
Hard copies will be available from Canning Libraries soon!

Ageism Awareness Day - 9 October 2024
Save the Date! Ageism Awareness Day is Wednesday 9 October 2024
Founded by EveryAGE Counts, Australia's national coalition of organisations against ageism, Ageism Awareness Day is a reminder to all Australians that ageism is still common within the Australian community. Ageism has a direct adverse impact on the lives of many Australians in such areas as aged care, provision of health services and employment and is a contributing factor to elder abuse. Ageism could impact every one of us as we age.
A spokesperson for EveryAGE Counts, Dr Marlene Krasovitsky said, “Ageism is stereotyping, discrimination and mistreatment of people solely on the basis of age. Ageism has devastating impacts on physical and mental health, longevity, employment prospects and participation opportunities”
This year’s theme is End Ageism in Advertising. If you want tips and ideas on selecting non-ageist images and wording of older Australians check out the attached document or visit https://www.everyagecounts.org.au/campaign_materials for posters to promote.

Learn how to make the most of your WA Seniors Card free travel and more. Then apply your practical knowledge on a Network Tour to Burswood Train Station in preparation for Have a Go Day, Burswood 2024.

Canning's Purple Roads

The Purple Road Project is a collaborative artwork initiative that aims to raise awareness about elder abuse.
Thank you to Beananging Kwuurt Institute, Rostrata Craft Group and all the creative community members who helped design an amazing three Purple Roads for Canning last month! The participants all commented on the strength, support and solidarity they found, while making all the individual flowers representing a symbol of Elder Abuse Awareness.
You're invited to come and see the amazing Canning Purple Roads at Riverton Library from 8 - 27 June 2024, in recognition of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on 15 June. There will also be resources available for those wanting support or more information about this important human rights issue.
