As part of the City's commitment to understanding our community and providing services in line with community expectations the City periodically reviews its policies. The City is currently reviewing its Verge Maintenance policy ET524 Verge Mowing and Maintenance of City Land and is seeking your feedback.

The City currently undertakes maintenance of verges on major roads and residential verges to manage excessive grass growth, maintain sightlines for motorists and keep a tidy streetscape environment. The service is available to all Canning residents who apply and meet the existing eligibility criteria with up to 3 services provided per year.

There are approximately 6400 verges that are currently mowed by the City adjacent to residential properties where the resident can't or doesn't maintain the area themselves and the verge area meets the eligibility criteria.

The City is reviewing the service level and eligibility criteria for requests for residential verge mowing. A copy of the current policy ET524 Verge Mowing and Maintenance of City Land and proposed revised policy ET524 Verge Mowing and Maintenance of City Land can be found on the right hand side of this page under Policy Documents.

The main changes proposed to this policy are that;

(1) The City will no longer mow residential verges unless the adjoining landowner is a resident and can demonstrate an incapacity to undertake mowing due to age, infirmity or other disability,

(2) Residents with an incapacity to undertake mowing due to age, infirmity or other disability will not be eligible unless they are the landowner,

(3) The City will only provide one service per annum to eligible landowners and

(4) Eligible landowners will have to request the service each calendar year.

The draft policy proposes a two year transition in reducing the number of mowing services, tightening of eligibility criteria and the need to request the service each year. The current service allows for up to three mowing services per year for eligible residents which looks to be reduced, to encourage residents to undertake or arrange mowing themselves or adopt a waterwise verge.

The City budgets $350,000 for unkempt verge mowing. This is delivered through a combination of City Staff and contract support. To provide an additional verge mowing service per annum would cost approximately $57,400.

Subject to Council approval, the City is looking to use funds saved from the policy change to support a waterwise verge pilot program which encourages residents to install waterwise verge gardens using native plants. Residents could apply for rebates and subsidies through the pilot program.

The City values your feedback and has created a short survey for you share with us your thoughts. The survey can be accessed by clicking the survey link at the bottom of this page and will be available until 5pm April 8. So please log on and tell us what you think and have Your Say. If you have any queries, are experiencing difficulty with accessing the survey or just want to tell us in person, please contact the City on 1300 422 664 during business hours.
