Street Naming Project- Name your local streets

Ever wished you could name your own street? Your time has come!

The City of Canning has over 30 possible future streets that would require naming and we need your help.

We’re searching for names that have a local context i.e. local birds, animals, plants or local places and people of historical significance.

Landgate has strict requirements for eligible street names, so for your name to be considered it will need to meet the street naming conventions below:

  • The road names are to consist of a single name element followed by a road type. For example, Smith Road not John Smith Avenue. For the purposes of the survey only the name element is required and not the road type.
  • Uses of prefixes and suffixes are not supported. An exception that may be considered is when the name is derived from a local feature of historical significance such as ‘Lake Clifton Drive’. (A prefix is a letter or group of letters added at the start of a word to make a new word eg. able becomes unable. A suffix is a letter or group of letters added at the end of a word to make a new word eg. forget becomes forgetful.)
  • Numerical road names are not supported, for example ‘Eighth Avenue’.
  • The names should be relatively easy to pronounce.
  • Names shall not include numbers, punctuation, symbols or logograms.
  • Submissions of offensive or derogatory names will be removed.

You are welcome to submit more than one name, however each name will need to meet the above criteria and each entry must include a short paragraph outlining the name's local context.

Participants need to provide their name and contact details so we can get in touch if we require more information about your submission.

We've also provided a short list of suggestions that you may wish to use as examples for your own submission, or simply select your favourites. You can find the list below. You are welcome to vote and make a new name suggestion, or simply do one or the other.

This is a unique opportunity to have significant names recognised and the City looks forward to hearing from you.

Please note: the City reserves the right to determine which of the suggested names are suitable based on existing street names, local significance and validity under Landgate's Policies and Standards for Geographical Naming in Western Australia. There is no guarantee that a submission will be adopted by Council.
