What is place making and place activation?

Place making recognises that people make place. Place activation/place making is planning for diverse human activities through the design of the built form and programming of space.

Place making is a collaborative and often creative process that brings together soft and hard elements together. They can be short and long term activities or structures, events, public art, festivals, parklets, temporary planters, moveable seating, giant games, pop-up shops and food vendors, galleries and much much more.....

    Why are we doing this?

The Strategic Community Plan highlighted some of the community priorities and created the vision of a welcoming and thriving City. Place activation is one of the tools that can be used to respond to these priorities. The purpose of the City Activation Plan is to provide a statement of the City’s position and framework on place activation in line with the broader community vision for the City. Additionally, the Plan will identify and prioritise key areas, stakeholders and opportunities within the City.

Pilot Place Activation Area - Corner Glenmoy Ave and Rostrata Ave, Willetton

The City is on a journey with place activation and what works for Canning. Therefore, we will be trialling engaging the community in more depth to prepare a Pilot Activation Project and Place Action Plan to make Rostrata Shopping Centre and surrounds an even better place. This will help learn what works as we activate more places throughout the City.

We will hold a "Hello Rostrata, Meet our Community" event on 25 May 2018,  5 - 8pm. Look out for more details.

What are the places chosen for place assessments and why were they chosen?

While the community will have an opportunity to identify places they would like to activate, the City, with previous community engagement and strategic planning have identified a number of initial areas to explore. The initial areas for more targeted engagement are:

    1. Corner Glenmoy Ave, Rostrata Ave, Willetton

    2. Corner Lynwood Ave and Metcalfe Rd, Lynwood

    3. Chapman Rd shops, St James

    4. Apsley Rd, Willetton

    5. Corner Ferndale Cres and Metcalfe Rd, Ferndale

    6. Livingston Shopping centre, Nicholson Rd, Canning Vale

    7. Queens Park Train Station Area (Seven Oaks Rd side)

These areas have the added benefit of being small in scale (easier to implement and engage), have outward facing shops/interfaces, good accessibility (car/bus/pedestrian), close to schools and parks.

The City Activation Plan will take into account the work on the Shelley Foreshore activation project, Kent St Weir, Canning City Centre and Bentley Regeneration place activation.
