Consultation has concluded

The City is on a continuing journey to make Canning a welcoming and thriving City. To do this, the City needs to have a balance of local laws that keep people safe but also are not unnecessarily restrictive. The City proposes to review its local laws to;

  • Remove unnecessary regulation;
  • Enable improved interpretation and understanding of the laws;
  • Remove inconsistencies or duplication across statutes; and
  • Streamline administrative processes.

The review includes the following local laws:

The City considers the review of its local laws as a high priority. Throughout the review processes the City will take into account, among other things:

  • The requirements of the Local Government Act 1995 and other laws;
  • Internal and external consultation; and
  • What the Department of Local Government and the Joint Standing Committee on Delegated Legislation will consider when scrutinising the City’s proposed local laws.

Discussion Paper

The City has prepared a brief discussion paper to provide information and questions designed to stimulate thought/discussion when considering the City’s proposal to review its local laws. It can be viewed here.

  • The Discussion Paper provides information on the review. The laws are publicly available and found on the City’s website and in the Document Library section of this page. Prompts for reviewing local laws - The following questions may promote discussion when reviewing local laws.

    • How could local laws provisions be improved to assist Local Governments, the community and business?
    • What costs would be saved by these improvements?
    • What, if any, specific problems do you experience with legislation administered by the City?
    • Has community behavior or views moved beyond the requirements of the laws?
