Backstory?

In 2018, Council endorsed the City of Canning’s Local Biodiversity Strategy 'the Strategy' which set out the vision that ‘Over the next 20 years, the diversity of indigenous species and ecosystems is conserved, resilient to threats, restored and valued by the community.’

The Local Biodiversity Strategy 2018 is one of the City's key strategic documents which sits beneath the Urban Forest Strategy 2021. The Strategy provides technical guidance towards ensuring biodiversity and natural area assets are represented and complement the City's overall urban forest targets and projections.

To help inform your feedback, please refer to the summary below of some of the Strategy's key milestones over the last five years:

  • 27% of actions have been completed, with a further 60% on track and progressing. 10% have been identified at risk and 3% not commenced.
  • Revegetation and remediation of 80.7 hectares of City and State managed land. In summary:
    • Revegetation of approximately 60 hectares of degraded and cleared City managed land, 24% of the City’s aim by 2038. An additional 12 hectares of infill planting occurred in these newly planted areas.
    • Support through the City funded Canning Community Landcare Officer to assist community groups and the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions to revegetate and remediate 22.7 hectares of State managed land.
    • Overall, 32% of the City's revegetation goal by 2038.
  • Three hectares of areas of priority conservation action (APCA) reclassified to conservation,
  • Successful endorsement of the Cat Local Law 2021,
  • Establishment of new local aboriginal group and traditional owner relationships,
  • Ongoing partnerships with locally and regionally significant environmental groups, and
  • Adoption of a Local Planning Policy addressing tree preservation (LP.09 Tree Planting and Retention).

What's been shaped?

It has been five years since the Strategy was endorsed and as per Action 26, the City has commenced a review to revisit the Strategy's vision, assess the progress of its actions and recommend necessary adjustments for upcoming years.

Get Involved?

As a member of the City’s Sustainability and Environment Advisory Group (SEAG), or key contact person for a local environmental or aboriginal group, you have been identified as a valuable and interested stakeholder to participate in the five year review.

The City requests that one survey is completed per group and one survey for each community member of the SEAG committee. If you are a member of the SEAG committee as well as a key representative of a community group, you may complete two surveys to capture the different perspectives of each role.

As part of this review process, the City is seeking your feedback via completing the below 15 minute survey which will assist the City in its preparation of the Strategy review report.

What are the next steps?

The key findings of the review will be made available to SEAG and community groups prior to being presented at a future Ordinary Council Meeting for endorsement. Thank you for your assistance to create a thriving natural environment for Canning’s future.
