Centenary Park West foreshore, Wilson - Dog prohibition consultation
Community consultation notice
The City is inviting community feedback on a proposed change to where dogs are allowed to be off-leash along the foreshore at Centenary Park West, Wilson.
Council resolved at its Ordinary Meeting on 18 March 2025 to seek further community sentiment about dog access in and along the river area of Centenary Park West. The proposal is to change the foreshore area to the west and south of the dual-use pathway to a dog-prohibited zone to help protect native wildlife and bushland along this stretch of river.
Since 2021, the City’s Natural Areas team has established approximately 5,000 square metres of revegetation along the foreshore. This planting helps filter stormwater before it enters the river and supports local ecological communities. The area provides habitat for wildlife including Black Swans and Musk Ducks that nest in the reeds.
If adopted, around 6,000 square metres of nearby parkland would remain available for off-leash dog exercise, and owners would still be able to walk their dogs along the footpath.
The City recognises the important role parks play in supporting healthy, active lifestyles for both dogs and their owners. At the same time, we are mindful of the need to care for sensitive natural areas and protect local wildlife. Even well-behaved off-leash dogs can unintentionally disturb nesting birds, damage revegetation, or encounter hazards such as snakes that inhabit the foreshore environment.
We are seeking input from the whole community before any decision is made.
We encourage you to share your views to help Council consider the balance between recreation and environmental protection.
Please note:
There is no proposal to change the off-leash status elsewhere within Centenary Park, Wilson.
If supported, dogs (on-leash or off-leash) would not be permitted within the foreshore area shown in red on the map.
